Amnesty: Fairness over Finality
Last July, despite strong evidence of his innocence, Troy Davis came within 24 hours of execution by the state of Georgia. No physical evidence tied Davis to the murder for which he was condemned; his conviction relied on the testimony of 9 people, 7 of whom have recanted or changed their testimony (one who did not is the alternate suspect, who evidence suggest was the actual gunman).
After Amnesty International USA put out a call to its membership to persuade the Georgia parole board to give Troy time to present evidence of his innocence, he was granted a 90-day stay. The Georgia Supreme Court agreed to hear Troy’s appeal, and begins hearing oral arguments on 13 November, 2007.
But the stay of execution is only a temporary reprieve; Troy Davis could still be scheduled to die by lethal injection in the near future. .

Anita Roddick
The Ogoni Foundation
Founded in 1995 by a small, committed group of Ogoni in the UK, to raise awareness about the economic deprivation, environmental devastation, and gross human rights abuses suffered by native peoples in the Niger Delta at the hands of multinational oil companies such as Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron. Anita joined the Ogoni struggle and befriended playwright and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa before his execution by the corrupt Nigerian government. With the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) in Nigeria, Anita’s work to expose the corruption and injustice helped free 20 Ogoni from Nigerian jails. But the struggle goes on.
